Shipping giant China Cosco Holdings will add 64 vessels to its fleet of 144 container ships this year to meet rising demand.

China’s top shipping liner plans to raise its 2008 capital expenditure by 37 percent to US$3.32 billion to expand its fleet and port investments.

China Cosco’s net profits more than doubled last year, shooting up 134 percent to bring in $2.78 billion, compared with $1.14 billion in 2006.

The significant increase in profits was mainly attributable to China Cosco’s acquisition of a subsidiary owned by its parent company, Cosco Group, which owns the world’s largest dry-bulk shipping fleet.

American mining equipment manufacturer, Bucyrus International Inc, entered into a preliminary agreement in late April 2008 with Huainan Mining Industry Group for a possible joint venture in China’s Anhui Province.

The preliminary agreement lays groundwork for Bucyrus’ potential controlling interest in a joint venture for a new manufacturing plant that would initially build belt systems and armored face conveyors for resale on a preferential basis to Huainan Mining, as well as to third parties. The joint venture could eventually manufacture and sell additional underground mining equipment as well, Bucyrus said in a news release.

“The first step in a resulting joint venture will extend our market coverage and provide us with a low-cost manufacturing base in China,” said Tim Sullivan, president and CEO of South Milwaukee-based Bucyrus International. “Huainan Mining will benefit from the higher technology of our products, and the region will gain through the development of a high-technology manufacturing base.”

With both companies emphasizing the preliminary agreement is an initial step, they expect that equipment manufacturing and sales could begin within about nine months of completion of the joint venture.

Bucyrus International (NASDAQ: BUCY) designs and manufactures mining equipment for the surface and underground mining industries.

Regal Beloit Corp. has recently acquired Joyce Court Holdings Ltd. and Grand Delight Investments Ltd., sole shareholders of Wuxi Hwada Motor Co. and Wuxi New Hwada Motor Co. in Wuxi, Jiangsu province.

The firms were purchased in late April 2008 for US$27.6 million in cash and the assumption of approximately US$8 million in net liabilities. Additionally, under the terms of the transaction, the company will pay to the seller up to US$8.5 million received by the company in the future upon the sale of certain real property rights owned by Hwada.

Hwada is one of China’s leading designers and manufacturers of Integral IEC and NEMA electric motors, which are used in various industrial applications such as compressor, pump, paper and steel processing, and power plants. Approximately 50 percent of Hwada’s product sales are in China’s domestic industrial markets. The other half are exported to Europe, the United States and Southeast Asia. The business will be reported as part Regal Beloit’s electrical segment. The acquired businesses are expected to add approximately US$75 million to US$80 million in sales for the Beloit-based company.

Henry Knueppel, chairman and chief executive officer of Regal Beloit, said, “We are very excited to announce the acquisition of Hwada. This is another significant, strategic-focused expansion of our industrial business in high growth markets. Hwada is currently one of the top industrial motor companies in China. It enjoys a reputation of product excellence and rapid growth and comes with an excellent management team.”
